Our Under 13 DDSL Premier team took part in the 5th International Carnaval Cup in Barcelona this weekend.
The International Carnival Cup is the heir to the Argentona Cup tournament and this year was based in grounds of CE Premia de Dalt and included first class teams of the category of CF Barcelona, RCD Espanyol, Valencia CF, Real Madrid, Real Zaragoza and some foreign team such as Genk from Belgium, Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion and St. Kevin's Boys along with teams from Japan, Finland, Israel and the United States.
The tournament was divided into 7 Groups of 4 with the top 2 in each group along with the 2 best placed third teams qualifying for the last 16.
SKB's initial group of 4 featured: RCD Espanyol, C F Damm and Luton Town.
Two contrasting results in the opening two games of the tournament for SKB as Luton Town were overpowered with a dominant performance from the start which yielded 4 goals in the first 15 minutes of the game which is a straight 40 minute game with no halftime break - the final result was 8-0 with Kevin Zeffi (4) Byron Preston (3) and Luke Browne the scorers.
The second game against RCD Espanyol - who had put five past Luton Town earlier was a much tougher task and lapses in concentration against a top quality side are always going to be punished and they were when in a 15 minute spell the local side scored four times thereby settling the game as a contest - they added a fifth in injury time.
In the final group game today Damm CF a very talented local side who had drawn with Espanyol 0-0 and beaten Luton Town 5-0 winner which set up a possible winner take all game for the right to join Espanyol in the last 16 but although Damm CF beat us 4-2 the winner did not take all as those two goals from Justin and Jamie ensured that SKB progressed to the last 16 as one of the two best third placed teams in the seven groups and a meeting with Valencia who had topped their group comfortably.
It proved to be a hurdle too far as the classy Spaniards were too good dominating the 40 minutes and winning comfortably in the end 3-0. The SKB group was undoubtly the toughest in the tournament with three of the four teams reaching the last 16 and two reaching the last 8 and one getting to the final - Espanyol. The outright winners Valencia beating SKB in the last 16.
The quarter final line up was as follows:
Manchester City - RCD Espanyol
Valencia CF - Damm CF
FC Barcelona - Royal Sociedad
Sant Gabriel - Real Zaragoza
Valencia won the Tournament beating Espanyol 1-0 in the final with Barcelona filling 3rd place having defeated Real Zaragoza 3-0 in the play off for 3rd and 4th place.
