What a day at Shanowen Road today as our U14 Premier team continued their run in the U14 SFAI Cup with a semi final win against a fancied and determined Clontarf FC.
They had to dig deep and defend in numbers at times against a Clontarf side that were well organised and showed exactly why they had gone this deep into the competition.
Scoreless at the break despite both sides having a few half chances - the better ones falling to the home side who had the advantage of a strong breeze at their backs in the first half.
SKFC started the second half in a more determined fashion and took the game to the visitors and got the breakthrough when Alex O'Reilly finished off a good passing move with a crisp low drive into the bottom corner. From there to the finish the tie was in the balance and goalkeeper Darragh Donnelly came to the home sides rescue on two occasions with vital saves but they saw out the game to reach next months final.
Great credit is due to all the players in the squad and managers Jamie Kernan and Ruari Devlin who only came together as group following the club trials last July and are still in the hunt for the three titles available to them this season.
They have now come through seven rounds to get to the final overcoming Templeogue United, Ballyoulster United, Newbridge Town, Pike Rovers, Freebooters FC, College Corinthians and now Clontarf FC.
One more to go against either Mount Merrion FC or Lakewood Athletic (Cork).
With our U18 Premier team already qualified for the FAI Youth Cup final against Pike Rovers FC on Saturday week in Home Farm FC we are all hoping that they and the U14's can make it a double celebration for SKFC this season.

The first game at Shanowen Road produced an absolute cracker when Cherry Orchard were the visitors in the quarter final of the DDSL Kavanagh Cup.
The two sides met in Elmdale in the SFAI Cup first round before Christmas where only a single goal seperated the sides on that occasion in favour of Cherry Orchard.
So not much between them on form.
On this occasion the home side grabbed the initiative from the start and were two goals up midway through the first half with goals from Jack Moore and Jamie Costigan.
The complexion of the game changed soon after when the referee brandished two yellow cards (harshly) in quick succession to SKFC goalkeeper Isa Hannon and his dismissal gave Cherry Orchard renewed hope as up until then they had been outplayed all over the pitch.
With Kayden O'Donnell (who produced some fine saves) coming on in goal the eight men faced the rest of the game depleted in numbers but not in bravery skill or committment.
Cherry Orchard pulled one goal back but the score remained at 2-1 as the clock went into injury time and the home side looked like holding on for a win but they conceeded a second at the death which sent the game to extra time.
More twists and turns followed with Cherry Orchard taking the lead for the first time and they must have thought that they were through to the semi-final but two absolute fantastic strikes from Jack Moore - one from a free kick - and the other strike was as good a goal that has has ever been scored at the ground.
A superb hat trick for Jack Moore and full credit to the rest of the squad who overcame adversity to reach the semi-final.
A great game - well done to both teams.
